Before and after a rhinoplasty

Going through the surgery

Look for a surgeon with a state-of-the-art suite for operations and a high rating from customers. Make sure the surgeon fully understands what you want. Some surgeons use computer imaging to show you possible outcomes, letting you show exactly what you want. But don’t forget to listen to the doctor’s advice — you might need a chin implant instead of a nose job, and the nose you want might not be right for your face.

Two weeks before undergoing rhinoplasty, you should stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E or herbal supplements. Also, if you smoke, this is the time to stop, at least until the healing process is complete. One day before surgery, cut back on salt. Arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery, and to help you out for the first few days while you recover.

After surgery, don’t do anything strenuous, and don’t blow your nose. There will usually be swelling and bruising in the nose. You won’t be able to see exactly what your new nose looks like until the swelling is gone, and not everyone who gets a nose job is satisfied with the results. According to a study published this month in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, about one in thirty need revision. If you’re one of the unlucky ones, it is possible to perform a rhinoplasty to improve the results of a previous nose job.

Looking younger with a brow lift

How a brow lift can help

Brow lifts have been performed since 1910, and with every generation the technique has been refined. By inserting an apparatus called an endoscope, a surgeon can look under your skin and study the attachment of skin and muscle. What sort of brow lift you will get depends on where the sagging is. A lateral brow lift is appropriate when the skin is sagging more around the temples than in the center. An asymmetric brow lift is when the skin is sagging more on one side than on another, and a full brow lift and a three-quarter brow lift are used in slightly different cases when all parts of the forehead need to be lifted.

A brow lift may also be combined with other forms of facial plastic surgery to create an overall younger appearance. The procedure can sometimes also remove signs of aging in the area of the upper eyelid, if the skin of the brow has sagged toward the upper eyelid. Slightly different procedures can be used for men and women, if the patient wishes.

Tips on rhinoplasty

Questions people have about rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the most common type of facial plastic surgery, with 217,000 nose jobs performed in the United States in 2014. It covers procedures that can change the size of the tip of the nose, make it point in a slightly different direction, shrink a nasal hump or fix a broken nose. With the nose in the center of the face, few things can improve the face more dramatically than improving the nose.

One question people have about rhinoplasty is how long the recovery time is and how to best care for their nose during recovery. The bruising fades within a week to ten days, but the swelling can last for several weeks. For the first week, you should try not to blow your nose or wear glasses. (It’s a good idea to get prescription contacts before seeking a nose job.) Another thing people sometimes want to know is whether they can have a nose just like their favorite celebrity. The problem is that they generally don’t have a face just like that celebrity. It’s best to listen to the plastic surgeon.

BOTOX best given by professionals

BOTOX in Charlotte, NC

BOTOX – Charlotte, NC

BOTOX convenient, effective

BOTOX injections have been the top nonsurgical cosmetic procedure since 2000. Facial plastic surgeons and other experts performed 4.2 million BOTOX cosmetic injections last yearThe injection itself takes about ten minutes, and most people are able to complete a normal day’s worth of work. Results usually appear within one to two days, and last three to six months, after which patients may come back for a follow-up injection. Many patients have found that the results of BOTOX seem to last up to several months longer after several treatments.

BOTOX uses a purified protein from the bacteria Clostridium botulinum to deactivate and relax the facial muscles that produce frown lines, laugh lines and other dynamic wrinkles by their movement. It is not recommended for patients who are pregnant, nursing or suffer from a neurological disease. Properly used by an expert in facial plastic surgery, BOTOX can make a person look naturally younger. But because BOTOX is so common and easy to use, it is often used by people who are not fully qualified or lack skill. This can lead to people looking unnaturally smooth and with limited facial mobility.

SOOF lift can have a big effect

Younger-looking eyes

We can tell when somebody looks older, but apart from obvious differences like more wrinkles, we may not be able to say precisely what the changes in appearance are. One thing a facial plastic surgeon learns to do is understand the precise nature of the changes and find ways to reverse them. There is a small deposit of fat under our eyelids called the suborbicularis oculi fat, or SOOF, held in place by a kind of connective tissue called the fascial layer. As we age, the fascial layer relaxes and the SOOF sinks to the tops of our cheeks. This is a mark of increasing age that most people may not be consciously aware of.

An open lower lid blepharoplasty involves an incision under the eyelashes of the lower lid, lifting the skin and muscle and removing the fat. This gets rid of wrinkles, but it leaves the lower eyelid and tear trough looking hollow. Sometimes the surgeon replaces this deposit of fat with a deposit of fat taken from another part of the body, but the effect is sometimes temporary. A better approach is the SOOF life blepharoplasty, in which the surgeon returns the suborbicularis oculi fat to its original place and retightens the fascial layer to hold it there.

Nose jobs a source of new confidence

Feeling good about rhinoplasty

Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby said of her new nose that “It looks exactly like when I Photoshopped it! I love it.”

Over a hundred thousand people get rhinoplasties every year. For those who have felt self-conscious about their faces for so long, it is liberating to finally be able to show the world a face you are comfortable with. Some young women have chosen to document every stage of their own rhinoplasties and recoveries for their friends — not only the before and after, but the transition period between the end of the surgery and the dissipation of the aftereffects.

Rhinoplasty can also solve some breathing problems, such as sleep apnea from a deviated septum. It can even be given to patients to fix earlier nose jobs. This is called revision rhinoplasty, and it is particularly complex. A patient should wait for at least one year after one rhinoplasty before undergoing a revision, and look for a surgeon who has often done revision rhinoplasties.

After surgery, there is a certain amount of swelling, moderate bruising and sometimes temporary skin numbness. The bruising fades within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks. Don’t jump to any conclusions about what your new nose looks like until the swelling has gone down.

Spring into a new nose

With spring around the corner, you may be interested in a new look. According to research published in Clinical Psychological Science, a majority of cosmetic surgery patients have realistic expectations of the outcome, and as a group they are happier, not just with the operated area, but with their bodies as a whole. Since a nose that seems even a little misshapen or too large can put a lot of pressure on a person’s self-esteem, rhinoplasty is the most popular form of facial plastic surgery. Even those who have had very minor changes to their nose have found it enables them to stop obsessing over the subject.

Reasons for a nose job in Charlotte include reducing a hump on the bridge of the nose, adjusting the tip of the nose or repairing a deviated septum. The septum is the part of the nose between the nostrils, and if it’s damaged, that can affect breathing. Sometimes a rhinoplasty is performed to improve the results of a previous nose job. This is called a revision rhinoplasty. If you are considering this, you should wait for at least one year after the first rhinoplasty.

Eye lifts and brow lifts

Two different procedures

There are two ways that aging can give your eyes an older, more tired appearance, and two ways that a cosmetic surgeon can make them look young again.

In some cases, the problem isn’t with the eyelids themselves, but with the forehead. Sagging skin on your forehead works its way into the space of the upper eyelids. This can be fixed by an endoscopic brow lift. The surgeon draws the skin, muscle and connective tissue back into place. After the surgery, pain medication will be needed for one to two days. Swelling and bruising should be gone in no more than two weeks.

In other cases, an upper eyelid blepharoplasty is called for. This is the procedure that is usually called an eye lift. The surgeon makes an incision along the fold of the upper eyelid, andremoves excess skin, fat and muscle. The procedure is done under general anesthesia. Afterwards, you can expect some mild swelling. This may go away in the first week, or take several weeks. There may also be some itchiness and dryness, which will also go away. The stitches will dissolve or be taken out in about five days. Bruising should disappear in seven to 10 days, and can be hidden by makeup during that time.
