Teen Rhinoplasty Overview
Teen rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure involving the nose. Dissatisfaction with your perceived physical appearance can have a detrimental impact on your overall self-confidence and happiness. Teenage candidates in the Charlotte, NC area can opt for cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery to enhance their nose and overall impression of their face. Please note that teen rhinoplasty candidates need to have a fully developed nose in order to qualify for the procedure. This typically happens between the ages of 14 and 16 for girls, and 16 to 18 for boys.
The Procedure
Your surgeon will take a before photo and then discuss the results the surgery will produce. Teen candidates can also plan on their surgeon inspecting their nose before surgery. This is an important step to determine the nose’s internal and external structure. The surgeon may also assess the teen candidate’s chin. Oftentimes, a chin implant can complement rhinoplasty by making the nose appear smaller in profile. Sometimes, by adding a chin implant, the face is more balanced and the rhinoplasty results are even greater for a more balanced face.
Next, surgery is performed. For residents in Charlotte, NC, this is done at The Center for Facial Plastic and Laser Surgery, a state-of-the-art, private operative suite. Rhinoplasty almost always uses general anesthesia, which is why surgery is not done in office. Most teen patients do not require nasal packing post-surgery, and only have to bruise for 7-10 days. There may be some temporary numbness to the skin. Lastly, while swelling tends to last for only a few weeks, minor swelling can last up to several months.
Nose Shape and Structure
Teen rhinoplasty generally involves removing, increasing, or altering the bone and cartilage in the bridge and tip of the nose. This gives it its form and structure, and is accessed by making incisions inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty). If needed, incisions can also be made outside the nose (open rhinoplasty), for example along the columella, which separates the nostrils, or in the nostril creases. There are many different kinds of improvements that can be made to the nose, depending on the teen candidate’s particular needs and wishes.
