Rhinoplasty – Charlotte, NC

Closed and open rhinoplasty

There are two kinds of rhinoplasty — open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. In both cases, the surgeon changes the shape of the bone and cartilage under the skin in order to reshape the nose. In a closed rhinoplasty, the doctor makes the incisions inside the nose, hiding them from view and making sure the result looks completely natural. If this is not possible, the surgeon will perform an open rhinoplasty, in which an incision is made on the outside of the nose — usually between the nostrils. The greater the surgical alteration, the more skill is required of the surgeon.

After surgery, there will usually be swelling in the nose, along with some bruising. The bruising will fade within a week to ten days, while the swelling can last for several weeks. You will not be able to see exactly what your new nose looks like until the swelling has gone down. Look for a surgeon with a gallery of before and after rhinoplasty photographs on his or her Web site.
