The purpose of a rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty surgery is also known as nose augmentation, nose surgery, or even a nose job. Charlotte’s best rhinoplasty surgeon, Dr. M. Sean Freeman performs rhinoplasty for several reasons. These include reducing or increasing the size of the nose, changing the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrowing the width between the nostrils or modifying the area between the nose and the upper lift. Dr. Freeman can also perform rhinoplasty for health reasons such as improving respiratory function or correcting birth defects.
Dr. Freeman performs rhinoplasty to address several different issues. These include a twisted nose, a nasal hump, tip rotation, and modifying the shape of the nose or the nostrils. Dr. Freeman also specializes in improving the proportion between the nose and the chin by performing a rhinoplasty with a chin implant. Dr. Freeman meets with every patient when they are considering rhinoplasty and discusses their goals for the procedure.
The procedure and recovery
Rhinoplasty is typically not covered by insurance, but if Dr. Freeman determines this is the best procedure to correct a defect or help for health reasons, health insurance may help with the cost. The rhinoplasty procedure itself is performed by Dr. Freeman at his Charlotte NC clinic in the state-of-the art operating suite. The surgery is typically done under either sedation or general anesthesia and does not require an overnight stay. Recovery from rhinoplast surgery generally takes at least ten days. Swelling and bruising will occur, but will disappear in about a week.
Addressing specific issues with rhinoplasty
Dr. Freeman recommends that his patients not undergo rhinoplast surgery until they are at least 14 years of age for women and 16 years of age for men. This is because the nose may not be completely formed until individuals reach these ages. During rhinoplasty surgery, Dr. Freeman will perform the surgery in one of two ways. The first is closed rhinoplast where Dr. Freeman makes incisions inside the nose. With a closed rhinoplast the incisions cannot be seen and recovery is much less extensive. Swelling disappears fairly quickly with a closed rhinoplast procedure allowing the patient to return to normal activities within a week to ten days.
The second type of rhinoplast procedure performed by Dr. Freeman is open rhinoplast done when a patient requires significant modification to their nose, especially the tip. During this procedure, Dr. Freeman will make an incision across the base of the nose. This type of incision allows Dr. Freeman easier access to and better visibility of the internal structure of the nose. This procedure does tend to increase swelling following surgery which make mean a longer recovery period for the patient.
