So you’ve gotten a bad nose job
According to a study published not long ago in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, about 3.3 percent of nose jobs or rhinoplasty (about one in thirty) need revision. According to the Web site Real Self, 90% of those who rated their rhinoplasties in the last two years said that they were worth it. Unfortunately, somebody has to be in that one in ten, or one in thirty.
If you’re one of the unlucky ones, it will be a little time before you can be certain of it. The swelling takes a few weeks to go down completely, and you can’t be certain of the shape of your nose until then. If the shape of your new nose is obviously wrong, a number of things might have happened. The surgeon might have underestimated the thickness of the skin on your nose or overestimated the strength of your nasal cartilage. This can happen sometimes with an inexperienced surgeon. Or, for that matter, he or she might have given you exactly the nose you asked for without mentioning that it would be unsuitable given the structure of your face — this sometimes happens when surgeons and patients fail to fully communicate. The healing process itself might have gone wrong — you might have sustained an injury while your nose was still fragile.
In any case, you’re not to be envied. When a nose looks wrong, it isn’t something you can hide. The problem you had hoped to solve through surgery has only gotten worse.
The good news
The good news is that there is no need for you to spend the rest of your life looking like this. Revision rhinoplasty is a specialized form of rhinoplasty that can correct the mistakes or accidents that sometimes happen with nose jobs. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait until at least a year after the initial surgery to have the corrective surgery done. When it is done, you’ll want it to be done by the best surgeon you can find, one who takes the time to find out what you want and figures out how best to achieve it, and who has acquired expertise in revision rhinoplasty.
