Not every rhinoplast turns out as planned
According to studies, of the people who undergo rhinoplasty about nine out of ten are happy with the results, and only about one in thirty needs revision. Considering we’re talking about a noticeable alteration to the human face, that’s a pretty good track record. But there’s no denying that there is a risk you’ll end up as a member of that one in thirty. Sometimes this happens when an inexperienced surgeon underestimated the thickness of a patient’s nasal skin, or overestimates the strength of the cartilage underneath. Sometimes the surgeon gives the patient exactly what he or she asked for, failing to mention that it wouldn’t quite suit his or her face. And sometimes something goes wrong during the healing process — as we’ll see, the nose is quite fragile while it heals.
It is a terrible experience to undergo rhinoplasty, wait weeks or months for the swelling to go down, only to find yourself with a nose as bad-looking or (more likely) worse-looking than the one you started out with. The bad news is that you’ll have to wait at least a year after the initial surgery to have the revision done. While you’re at it, get a head start on quitting smoking and learning to wear contacts if you have glasses — you won’t want to wear glasses during the recovery.
To make sure everything goes right this time, be sure to follow all of your doctor’s advice on taking care of yourself during recovery. Take your pain medication and antibiotics, drink plenty of fluids and get lots of sleep, keeping your head elevated while you sleep to reduce swelling. Try to avoid heavy exercise, contact with other people or bringing your nose into contact with anything for the next few weeks.
